The classic Peru itinerary and the Amazon extension are two different trips as far as vaccination goes. Cusco, Machu Picchu and Lake Titicaca sit too high for malaria and yellow fever; the jungle regions to the east do not.
Hepatitis A, hepatitis B, MMR and typhoid are typically recommended for Peru. Yellow fever, rabies and malaria tablets apply below 2,500 m east of the Andes, which is where an Amazon leg takes you. If the Amazon is part of your trip, raise it early: yellow fever needs 10 days before travel to count.

Malaria Prevention for Peru
Malaria may be present in areas below 2,500 m east of the Andes, including Iquitos and Puerto Maldonado, with rare cases in Tumbes and Piura. There is typically no transmission in Lima Province, in Arequipa, Ica, Nazca or Puno, or in the highland tourist areas of Cusco, Machu Picchu and Lake Titicaca.
Malaria pills, also called malaria prophylaxis, do not stop you being bitten. They work by killing the parasite in your bloodstream before it has a chance to multiply and make you ill, which is why they are taken daily through the trip and for a period after you leave.
At Singapore Women’s Clinic, we provide malaria pills in addition to travel vaccinations. It is best to consult our doctor 4 to 6 weeks before you fly, so that any tablets can be matched to your route and to medicines you already take. A later appointment is still worth making, as the course itself is usually started only 2 days before you arrive.
Vaccination Certificate Requirements for Entry and Re-Entry
Whether you need a certificate depends on the countries you pass through or come from. Before you travel, check your full route against the current list of countries with a risk of yellow fever transmission on Singapore's Immigration & Checkpoints Authority website.
Entering Peru
No certificate is required to enter Peru.
Singapore does require one when you come home, so the vaccine still matters on an Amazon itinerary.
Returning to Singapore
Singapore requires a yellow fever certificate if you have recently travelled to a country with yellow fever risk. It follows your route, not your destination, so it can apply even when the country you are visiting has no risk.
- Applies to all travellers, including Singapore residents, of any nationality.
- Includes airport transits of more than 12 hours in an affected country.
- Valid from 10 days after vaccination, then for life.
- Without a valid certificate you may be quarantined for six days under the Infectious Diseases Act, counted from the date you left the affected country.
- Exempt: Children aged one year and below; Travellers with a medical contraindication to the vaccine.
