For Bolivia, elevation decides which vaccines you need. The mosquitoes that spread yellow fever, malaria and chikungunya are not generally found in the highland cities, but they are present in the lowlands east of the Andes, where CDC currently reports a chikungunya outbreak.
Hepatitis A, hepatitis B, MMR, typhoid and chikungunya are typically recommended for Bolivia, the last because of the current outbreak. Yellow fever, rabies and malaria tablets depend on how high your stops are and on which side of the Andes they sit. Bring your route to a consultation, since in Bolivia the altitude of each stop decides most of the answer.

Malaria Prevention for Bolivia
Malaria may be present in all areas below 2,500 m, which means the eastern lowlands rather than the highland cities. There is typically no transmission in La Paz. Almost all cases here are the vivax type of malaria, which is usually less severe than the falciparum type but can come back months after you get home.
Malaria pills, also called malaria prophylaxis, do not stop you being bitten. They work by killing the parasite in your bloodstream before it has a chance to multiply and make you ill, which is why they are taken daily through the trip and for a period after you leave.
At Singapore Women’s Clinic, we provide malaria pills in addition to travel vaccinations. It is best to consult our doctor 4 to 6 weeks before you fly, so that any tablets can be matched to your route and to medicines you already take. A later appointment is still worth making, as the course itself is usually started only 2 days before you arrive.
Vaccination Certificate Requirements for Entry and Re-Entry
Whether you need a certificate depends on the countries you pass through or come from. Before you travel, check your full route against the current list of countries with a risk of yellow fever transmission on Singapore's Immigration & Checkpoints Authority website.
Entering Bolivia
Required of all arriving travellers from age 1, whichever country you arrive from.
The certificate becomes valid 10 days after vaccination.
Returning to Singapore
Singapore requires a yellow fever certificate if you have recently travelled to a country with yellow fever risk. It follows your route, not your destination, so it can apply even when the country you are visiting has no risk.
- Applies to all travellers, including Singapore residents, of any nationality.
- Includes airport transits of more than 12 hours in an affected country.
- Valid from 10 days after vaccination, then for life.
- Without a valid certificate you may be quarantined for six days under the Infectious Diseases Act, counted from the date you left the affected country.
- Exempt: Children aged one year and below; Travellers with a medical contraindication to the vaccine.
