Why Is the Influenza / Flu Vaccine Important?

The flu vaccine helps protect your body against the influenza virus, which spreads easily through droplets from coughing, sneezing, or even talking. While the flu may seem mild, it can sometimes lead to serious complications, especially for young children, older adults, and those with chronic health conditions.

Here's why getting vaccinated is important:

In Singapore, flu vaccination is typically recommended annually or twice a year due to circulating strains in both the Northern and Southern Hemisphere seasons.

What Are the Symptoms of Influenza (Flu)?

The flu is a common viral infection that can affect people of all ages. Symptoms usually appear suddenly and can range from mild to severe. Here's what to look out for:

  • Fever and chills: A high temperature is common, often with chills or shivering.
  • Cough and sore throat: These are typical flu symptoms, often accompanied by a dry cough and irritation in the throat.
  • Muscle aches and fatigue: Body aches, tiredness, and weakness are very common and can last for several days.
  • Headache and runny nose: Some people may experience a stuffy or runny nose along with pressure in the head.
  • Sudden onset: Flu symptoms tend to come on quickly, unlike the common cold which builds up more gradually.

Most healthy individuals recover within a week or so, but the flu can be more serious for the elderly, young children, pregnant women, and those with weakened immune systems. If symptoms worsen or do not improve, it's important to seek medical advice.

Influenza (Flu) Treatment

There is no quick fix for the flu, but the good news is that most people get better with rest and care. Here are some key things to know about flu treatment and recovery:

At Singapore Women's Clinic, we provide flu assessments and treatment, including antiviral medications when appropriate, to help you recover quickly and safely.

What Are the Side Effects of the Influenza (Flu) Vaccine?

The flu vaccine is generally very safe, and most people experience little to no side effects. When side effects do happen, they are usually mild and go away on their own within a few days. Here's what you might notice:

For most people, the benefits of getting vaccinated far outweigh the small risk of side effects. If you have concerns, our doctors at Singapore Women's Clinic are happy to answer your questions.

Who Should Get the Influenza (Flu) Vaccine?

The flu vaccine is recommended for most people and is especially important for those at higher risk of complications. Because flu viruses change regularly, it's a good idea to get vaccinated each year, or even twice a year in Singapore due to different seasonal strains.

Subsidies in Singapore

Singapore Citizens can enjoy flu vaccine subsidies under the CHAS, Pioneer Generation (PG), and Merdeka Generation (MG) schemes when vaccinated at participating GP clinics or polyclinics.

Permanent Residents (PRs) in eligible age groups or with certain medical conditions can receive subsidised vaccinations at polyclinics.

MediSave can also be used to pay for flu vaccinations at both CHAS GP clinics and polyclinics.

How Is the Influenza (Flu) Vaccine Given?

The flu vaccine is given as a single injection, usually in the upper arm. It takes about two weeks for the body to build protection after the shot.
