What Is the Purpose of the Tetanus Vaccine?
The tetanus vaccine helps protect you against tetanus, a potentially life-threatening disease caused by a toxin (poison) that bacteria release. Tetanus is uncommon in developed countries, but the infection can cause severe muscle spasms and problems affecting the nerves.
Keeping your tetanus vaccination up to date helps maintain long-term immunity and can lower your risk of serious complications.
What Is Tetanus?
Tetanus is an infection caused by the bacterium
Clostridium tetani, which is
typically present in soil, dust, and animal excreta.
The bacteria can enter the body through open wounds, especially deep puncture injuries, and produce
a toxin
that targets the nervous system.
This can result in intense muscle stiffness, spasms, and other systemic complications.
What Are Symptoms of Tetanus?
Symptoms generally develop within 3 to 21 days after the bacteria enter the body. Common signs include:
- Lockjaw (inability to open the mouth due to jaw muscle stiffness)
- Involuntary muscle spasms
- Generalised muscle rigidity and discomfort
- Trouble swallowing
- Episodes of convulsions
- Fever and headaches
- Increased blood pressure levels
Without timely treatment, the condition may progress rapidly and can be fatal.
How Does Tetanus Vaccine Work?
The vaccine prompts the immune system to develop antibodies against the tetanus toxin. These antibodies remain in the body to recognise and neutralise the toxin if exposure occurs, effectively preventing the onset of the disease.
Tetanus Vaccine Dose & Schedule
In Singapore, the tetanus vaccine is part of the routine DTaP immunisation
(Diphtheria, Tetanus, and
Acellular Pertussis) under the National Childhood
Immunisation Schedule. Vaccinations commence at 2 months of age and are followed by scheduled
boosters up to 11 years old.
For adults, especially those with incomplete vaccination histories or at-risk health conditions, a
Tdap booster is advised if their last dose was
more than 10 years ago.

How Is the Tetanus Vaccine Administered?
The vaccine is administered through an injection, commonly into a muscle (intramuscular route), such as the
upper arm.
In some cases, it may be given subcutaneously (just beneath the skin).
How Long Does the Tetanus Vaccine Last?
Immunity from the tetanus vaccine typically lasts for about 10 years. To maintain adequate protection, booster doses are recommended every decade or following potential exposure through injury.
Tetanus Vaccine Side Effects
Most side effects are mild and short-lived. These may include:
- Soreness or redness at the injection site
- Feeling light-headed
- Mild headaches
While serious reactions are rare, consult a healthcare provider if symptoms are persistent or intensify.
Rare But Serious Reactions to Watch For
Although uncommon, some individuals may experience severe allergic responses. Symptoms to look out for include:
- Swelling of the face or eyes
- Difficulty breathing
- Generalised itchy rash
