What Is Chlamydia?

Chlamydia is a common and curable bacterial sexually transmitted infection (STI) that often presents no symptoms in its early stages. Caused by Chlamydia trachomatis, it can affect both men and women and may lead to serious complications if left untreated.

Chlamydia in Singapore

Chlamydia remains the most frequently reported STI in Singapore, with 2,719 documented cases in 2018. This figure was 32% higher than that of gonorrhoea, the second most common STI.

The five most reported STIs in Singapore are outlined below:

STI Number of Reported Cases
Chlamydia 2,719
Gonorrhoea 2,051
Syphilis 1,441
Genital Warts 935
Genital Herpes 878

What Causes Chlamydia?

Chlamydia is transmitted through sexual contact, including vaginal, anal, or oral sex, with an infected individual.

It can also be passed from mother to baby during childbirth, potentially resulting in serious neonatal health issues. The bacteria can infect the cervix, urethra, rectum, throat, and eyes, depending on the type of exposure.

What Are Symptoms of Chlamydia?

Female experiencing pain in pelvic area showing symptoms of chlamydia such as burning or discomfort.

Chlamydia symptoms can vary depending on the infection’s location and may appear within 1 to 3 weeks after exposure, although many individuals experience no symptoms at all.

  • Pain or burning sensation during urination
  • Lower abdominal or pelvic pain
  • Vaginal discharge in women
  • Painful intercourse in women

If you suspect exposure or experience any of these symptoms, it is advisable to consult a doctor for prompt testing and treatment.

What Happens If Chlamydia Is Left Untreated?

If chlamydia is not diagnosed and treated early, it can lead to long-term health complications affecting fertility, pregnancy, and joint health. This may include:

How Is Chlamydia Tested and Diagnosed?

Doctor holding swab in front of seated female patient during chlamydia swab test preparation.

Chlamydia is tested using either a urine sample or a swab from the affected area, such as the cervix, urethra, rectum, or throat. The sample is then sent to a laboratory to check for the presence of the bacteria.

Urine tests are commonly used when there are no symptoms, while swabs may be taken if symptoms are present or depending on the site of possible exposure. If you are experiencing symptoms or suspect you have been exposed, testing is the only way to confirm the infection.

How Is Chlamydia Treated?

Chlamydia is typically treated with a prescribed course of antibiotics taken over several days.

Most infections resolve within 1 to 2 weeks of starting treatment. Even after the infection has cleared, retesting is advisable if you have a new sexual partner or if your previous partner was not tested or treated.
