The Hepatitis A vaccine helps prevent infection caused by the Hepatitis A virus (HAV), a virus primarily spread
through the ingestion of food or water contaminated with faecal matter. Transmission typically
occurs in settings with poor sanitation or hygiene standards.
While young children often show mild or no symptoms, older children and adults are more likely to experience
noticeable signs of illness if infected.
The Hepatitis A vaccine is considered an important public health measure, particularly for individuals at
increased risk of exposure.
It helps prevent a potentially serious viral liver infection that can lead to complications,
especially in adults. Vaccination also contributes to wider community protection by reducing
the risk of transmission in the population.
Common symptoms of Hepatitis A include:
Symptoms can range from mild to severe and typically appear a few weeks after exposure.
Vaccination is typically recommended for:
The vaccine can be administered on its own or in a combination formulation with the Hepatitis B vaccine.
These effects typically resolve within a few days without intervention.
The standard vaccination schedule involves two doses:
In some cases, the vaccine is offered in combination with the Hepatitis B vaccine. When this occurs, the number of doses may vary (typically two or three doses, depending on age and vaccine formulation).
It is best to consult a doctor to determine the most suitable vaccination plan for your needs and medical history.
The Hepatitis A vaccine provides long-term protection, with immunity lasting at least 20 years, and potentially for life after completing the full two-dose series.
However, routine booster doses are not currently recommended for healthy individuals. Your doctor may advise follow-up testing or vaccination in certain circumstances, especially if you have a weakened immune system or specific risk factors.
