What Is the Hepatitis A Vaccine?

The hepatitis A vaccine helps prevent hepatitis A, a liver infection caused by the hepatitis A virus (HAV). The virus spreads mainly through food or water contaminated with faecal matter (traces of stool), and infection happens most often in places where sanitation or hygiene is poor.

Young children who catch hepatitis A often have mild symptoms or none at all, while older children and adults are more likely to feel unwell.

Is the Hepatitis A Vaccine Important?

The hepatitis A vaccine is important because it helps prevent a liver infection that can cause complications, especially in adults. Vaccination matters most for people at higher risk of exposure, and it also helps reduce the spread of hepatitis A in the community.

What Are the Symptoms of Hepatitis A?

Hepatitis A symptoms usually appear a few weeks after exposure and can range from mild to severe:

Nausea
Persistent tiredness
Reduced appetite
Fever
Vomiting
Dark-coloured urine
Yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice)

Who Should Receive the Hepatitis A Vaccine?

The hepatitis A vaccine is typically recommended for anyone aged 12 months and above who plans to travel to areas where hepatitis A is common. It is also recommended for people who may be exposed to the virus through their work, lifestyle or a medical condition.

What Are the Potential Side Effects of the Hepatitis A Vaccine?

The hepatitis A vaccine usually causes only mild side effects, which typically go away on their own within a few days:

Pain, redness or swelling at the injection site
Headache or low-grade fever
Tiredness or general discomfort
Loss of appetite, stomach pain, nausea, vomiting or diarrhoea
Dizziness or feeling faint

How Many Doses Are Required for the Hepatitis A Vaccine?

The hepatitis A vaccine is given as 2 doses, with the second dose 6 to 12 months after the first. The first dose gives initial protection shortly after it is given, and the second dose helps provide long-term immunity.

The combined hepatitis A and B vaccine may need 2 or 3 doses, depending on age and vaccine formulation. A doctor can advise on the most suitable schedule for your needs and medical history.

Is the Hepatitis A Vaccine Good for Life?

The hepatitis A vaccine may protect you for life, with immunity lasting at least 20 years after the full 2-dose course. Routine booster doses are not currently recommended for healthy individuals. Your doctor may advise follow-up testing or vaccination in some cases, especially if you have a weakened immune system or other risk factors.
