Cervarix (HPV2 Vaccine): Cervarix is designed to protect against two high-risk HPV types: HPV 16 and 18. These strains are responsible for the majority of cervical cancer cases.

Gardasil 9 HPV vaccine protecting against nine HPV types including those causing cancer and genital warts

Gardasil 9 (HPV9 Vaccine): Gardasil 9 protects against nine types of HPV. These include high-risk types like 16, 18, 31, 33, 45, 52, and 58 that are linked to cervical and other cancers, as well as types 6 and 11, which cause genital warts.

Why is the HPV Vaccine Important?

The HPV vaccine helps protect your body from the Human Papillomavirus (HPV), a common virus that spreads through skin-to-skin contact, including sexual activity. Many people who have HPV don’t even know it—but it can lead to serious health problems later on. Here’s why getting vaccinated matters:

In short, the HPV vaccine is a simple way to protect yourself or your child from a virus that can cause cancer and other health issues later in life.

What are the Symptoms of HPV?

HPV can be common, and in most cases, people may be unaware they have the virus as they do not have symptoms. But depending on the type of HPV, it can lead to different health problems. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Most people have no symptoms at all: The body usually clears the virus on its own within one to two years without causing any issues.
  • Some types cause genital warts: These are small, skin-colored growths that can appear on the genitals, anus, or nearby areas. They are usually not painful but can be uncomfortable or itchy.
  • High-risk HPV can cause cancer: These types don’t cause visible symptoms, but over time, they can lead to cancers of the cervix, throat, anus, penis, vulva, or vagina.
  • Abnormal Pap smear results: In women, high-risk HPV is often detected through routine cervical screening, even when there are no visible signs or symptoms.
Because HPV often doesn’t show symptoms, regular screening (like Pap smears or HPV tests) and vaccination are important ways to stay protected.

There are different vaccination schedules for females and males of different ages.

HPV Treatment

There’s no cure for the HPV virus itself, but the health problems caused by HPV can be treated. What you should know:

The best way to protect yourself is through vaccination, regular screening, and early treatment if any problems are found.

Who Should Get the HPV Vaccine?

The HPV vaccine works best when given before any exposure to the virus, which is why it is recommended for younger individuals, especially before sexual activity begins.
