Polio vaccine to protect against poliomyelitis, available at ATA Medical clinic Singapore

What Is the Polio Vaccine?

The polio vaccine is a preventative immunisation designed to reduce the risk of polio infection. It is widely administered around the world and plays an essential role in reducing transmission and supporting global eradication efforts.

What Is Polio?

Polio, or poliomyelitis, is a highly infectious illness caused by the poliovirus, which exists in three forms: types 1, 2, and 3.

The virus spreads primarily through food and water contaminated with faecal matter or through direct contact with an infected individual.

Many infected persons do not exhibit symptoms, but in some cases, the virus can lead to serious complications such as permanent paralysis affecting the limbs or respiratory muscles, and in severe instances, it may be life-threatening.

How Does the Polio Vaccine Work?

The vaccine works by activating the immune system to produce antibodies that target the poliovirus.

These antibodies help the body recognise and neutralise the virus upon future exposure, significantly lowering the chance of illness and promoting long-lasting protection.

Types of Polio Vaccine

Two main types of polio vaccines are available:

Singapore uses the IPV as the standard due to its safety profile. The OPV, though effective, carries a minimal risk of virus mutation and has been phased out from regular immunisation schedules in many regions.

When to Take the Polio Vaccine?

In Singapore, the polio vaccine follows the National Childhood Immunisation Schedule (NCIS). It includes primary doses at 2, 4, and 6 months of age, with booster doses at 18 months and again between 10 and 11 years old.

For travellers to regions where polio is still present, a booster may be recommended if your last dose was administered over a decade ago.

It is advisable to check with a doctor for an updated immunisation assessment before travelling.

How Is the Polio Vaccine Administered?

The polio vaccine is delivered through injection, either intramuscularly or subcutaneously.

Polio Vaccine Dose & Schedule

Recommended schedule for the polio vaccine include:

  • For Adults Without Previous Vaccination – Three doses, spaced as follows:
    • Second dose: 1 to 2 months after the first
    • Third dose: 6 to 12 months after the first
In urgent situations, the doses can be spaced at 4-week intervals.
  • For Previously Vaccinated Adults – A single booster dose is suggested every 10 years if there is a potential risk of exposure, especially for those visiting areas where the virus remains active.

How Long Does the Polio Vaccine Last?

The polio vaccine provides long-lasting immunity for most individuals after completing the recommended three-dose schedule.

Although this protection typically lasts for many years, it may not be lifelong. People with a higher risk of exposure, such as those travelling to regions where polio is still present or working in environments with increased exposure, are advised to receive a booster dose every 10 years to ensure continued protection.

Polio Vaccine Side Effects

Common side effects include mild issues such as:

These symptoms are usually temporary. It is advisable to consult a doctor if symptoms persist or worsen.

Rare But Serious Reactions to Watch For

Although uncommon, some individuals may experience severe allergic responses. Symptoms to look out for include:

Seek immediate medical attention if any of these signs occur after vaccination.
