What Is the Typhoid Vaccine?
The typhoid vaccine helps protect against typhoid fever, a serious bacterial illness caused by Salmonella Typhi. You can catch typhoid fever from food or water contaminated with human faeces (stool), the same way people catch cholera and enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC).
Typhoid fever can lead to serious complications if it is not prevented by vaccination or treated early.
What Is Typhoid Fever?
Typhoid fever is a serious bacterial infection that
affects multiple organs in the body.
After entering the digestive system, Salmonella Typhi can multiply and spread into the bloodstream,
leading to widespread inflammation and systemic symptoms.
The illness is more common in
regions such as Asia, Africa, and Latin America,
where access to clean water and proper sanitation may be limited.
Typhoid Fever Symptoms
Typhoid fever typically presents with the following symptoms:
- High fever that gradually increases over several days
- Fatigue and generalised weakness
- Stomach discomfort or cramps
- Constipation, though some individuals may experience diarrhoea instead
- Loss of appetite
- Headaches
- Skin rash with flat, rose-coloured spots in some cases
If left untreated, the illness can progress to more serious complications such as intestinal bleeding or perforation.
Who Is the Typhoid Vaccine Recommended for?
The typhoid vaccine is recommended for individuals who may be exposed to
Salmonella Typhi during travel or certain activities.
This includes:
- Travellers to regions where typhoid fever is common, particularly in parts of South and Southeast Asia
- People staying for extended periods in areas with limited access to clean water and proper sanitation
- Individuals who may have close contact with someone recently infected with typhoid fever

How Is the Typhoid Vaccine Administered?
The typhoid vaccine is usually administered as an injection into a muscle, most commonly the upper arm.
Typhoid Vaccine Dose & Schedule
For adults and children aged 2 years and above, a
single dose of the typhoid vaccine is recommended.
It should be administered at
least two weeks before potential exposure, such as prior to travel to high-risk areas.
How Long Does the Typhoid Vaccine Last?
A booster dose of the typhoid vaccine is recommended every three years if the risk of exposure to typhoid fever persists.
Typhoid Vaccine Side Effects
Some people may experience mild side effects after receiving the typhoid vaccine. These can include:
- Dizziness
- Headaches
- Pain or redness at the injection site
These reactions are usually temporary. However, you should seek medical advice if they persist or become more severe.
Rare But Serious Reactions to Watch For
Although uncommon, some individuals may experience severe allergic responses. Symptoms to look out for include:
- Swelling of the face or eyes
- Difficulty breathing
- Generalised itchy rash
