Vaccination Requirements for Hajj and Umrah

Travellers from Singapore embarking on the Hajj or Umrah pilgrimage are required to receive three key vaccinations mandated by the Saudi Ministry of Health: Meningococcal ACWY, Influenza, and COVID-19 vaccines.

1. Meningococcal ACWY Vaccine

The Meningococcal ACWY vaccine is compulsory for all pilgrims. It protects against four strains of Neisseria meningitidis bacteria (A, C, W and Y), which can cause life-threatening infections such as meningitis and septicaemia, particularly in crowded settings.

When to receive it: At least 10 days before travel.

2. Influenza (Flu) Vaccine

Due to the high transmission risk in large gatherings, the flu vaccine is also a mandatory requirement. Influenza can lead to complications that may hinder a pilgrim’s ability to fulfil religious obligations.

When to receive it: Within 12 months before departure.

3. COVID-19 Vaccine

Pilgrims are required to meet COVID-19 vaccination criteria to minimise the risk of severe illness and reduce the potential for outbreaks during mass gatherings. Travellers must fulfil one of the following conditions:

It is advisable to consult a doctor 4 to 6 weeks prior to departure to review your vaccination status, confirm eligibility, and receive any necessary preventive treatment.

Travellers should prepare both physical and digital copies of their vaccination records using the HealthHub app, as these may be required at border checks.

Other Requirements and Recommendations

Beyond the mandatory vaccinations, additional vaccines are advised to safeguard health during pilgrimage.

Pneumococcal Vaccine

The pneumococcal vaccine is especially recommended for older adults, individuals with chronic illnesses, and those with weakened immune systems. Pneumococcal disease can cause serious infections including pneumonia, bloodstream infections (bacteraemia), and meningitis.

Other Routine Vaccinations

In addition to the required vaccines, pilgrims are advised to ensure their routine immunisations are current. These vaccinations help prevent the spread of common infectious diseases during large gatherings and protect vulnerable individuals.
