• Washing hands frequently with soap and clean water
• Drinking only bottled or treated water
• Avoiding raw or undercooked food
• Skipping ice that may have been made from untreated water

Vaccination plays a key role in protecting against cholera, particularly for individuals travelling to regions with ongoing or potential outbreaks. It provides an added layer of defence alongside food and water precautions, helping to reduce the risk of infection significantly.

How Is the Cholera Vaccine Administered?

The vaccine is given orally and usually requires a series of 1 to 3 doses depending on the traveller’s age and the product used.

Cholera Vaccine Dose & Schedule

The number of cholera vaccine doses required depends on the individual’s age. To ensure the vaccine works effectively, avoid eating or drinking for at least one hour before and after each dose.

• Adults and children over 6 years old – Should receive 2 doses, taken one week apart. The second dose must be completed at least one week before travel. A booster dose is recommended within two years if there is continued risk of exposure.
• Children between 2 and 6 years old – Require 3 doses, each spaced one week apart. The final dose should be taken at least one week before departure. A booster is advised six months after the last dose to maintain protection.
• Children under 2 years old – Dukoral is not recommended for this age group, as it is not approved for use in children under 2.

How Long Does the Cholera Vaccine Last?

Cholera Vaccine Side Effects

Side effects from the cholera vaccine are generally mild and tend to resolve on their own without treatment. Common symptoms may include:

• Stomach discomfort
• Diarrhoea
