What Is the Cholera Vaccine?

The cholera vaccine is an oral immunisation that helps protect against cholera infection. It is commonly recommended for individuals visiting regions where cholera transmission is active or where outbreaks are known to occur.

At ATA Medical, we provide the Dukoral oral vaccine, which offers protection against cholera and enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC), a frequent cause of diarrhoea in travellers.

What Is Cholera?

Cholera is a sudden-onset infection of the intestines caused by the Vibrio cholerae bacterium. It spreads primarily through ingestion of food or water contaminated with faecal matter.

Cholera Symptoms

Common signs of cholera infection may include:

  • Profuse, watery diarrhoea
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Muscle cramps, particularly in the legs
  • Discomfort or pain in the abdomen

Without timely treatment, cholera can rapidly lead to severe dehydration, circulatory collapse, kidney failure, and may be life-threatening in severe cases.

How to Prevent Cholera?

To lower the risk of cholera when travelling to endemic regions, practice strict food and water hygiene. This can include:

Vaccination plays a key role in protecting against cholera, particularly for individuals travelling to regions with ongoing or potential outbreaks. It provides an added layer of defence alongside food and water precautions, helping to reduce the risk of infection significantly.

How Is the Cholera Vaccine Administered?

The vaccine is given orally and usually requires a series of 1 to 3 doses depending on the traveller’s age and the product used.

Cholera Vaccine Dose & Schedule

The number of cholera vaccine doses required depends on the individual’s age. To ensure the vaccine works effectively, avoid eating or drinking for at least one hour before and after each dose.

If you are uncertain about the vaccination schedule, it is advisable to speak with a doctor for personalised guidance.

How Long Does the Cholera Vaccine Last?

In adults and children over 6 years of age, protection from the cholera vaccine generally lasts for about two years. A booster dose is recommended if there is ongoing risk.

For children aged 2 to 6, a booster is needed 6 months after the initial series. If the protection period has lapsed, restarting the primary series is advised.

Cholera Vaccine Side Effects

Side effects from the cholera vaccine are generally mild and tend to resolve on their own without treatment. Common symptoms may include:

If these symptoms do not improve or become more severe, it is important to consult a doctor.

Rare But Serious Reactions to Watch For

Although uncommon, some individuals may experience severe allergic responses. Symptoms to look out for include:

Seek immediate medical attention if any of these signs occur after vaccination.
