A CT (computed tomography) scan is a non-invasive imaging test that produces detailed cross-sectional images of the inside of the body.
It works by taking many X-ray views from different angles and combining them with computer processing into image "slices". Where a single flat X-ray gives one view, this layered picture shows soft tissue, blood vessels and bone in fine detail.
Because a CT scan can focus on almost any part of the body, it is used to investigate a wide range of concerns, from chest problems to a suspected stroke.
A CT scan can be done with or without a contrast dye, depending on which parts of the body need a closer look.
During your consultation, your doctor will discuss the most suitable options with you.
CT scans can cover almost any part of the body, with the type of scan depending on the area being investigated.
| Scan | Description & Purpose |
|---|---|
| Brain & Head CT | Examines the brain, skull and surrounding structures to assess headaches, head injuries, stroke-like symptoms, and sinus or facial problems. |
| Chest / Lung CT | Images the lungs and chest to investigate a persistent cough, breathlessness, or abnormalities seen on a chest X-ray. |
| Cardiac CT (Calcium Score & Coronary Arteries) |
Assesses the heart's arteries for calcium build-up and narrowing, used to estimate the risk of coronary artery disease. |
| Abdomen & Pelvis CT | Examines the abdominal and pelvic organs to investigate abdominal pain, abnormal blood results, or liver, kidney and bowel conditions. |
| KUB CT (Kidney, Ureter & Bladder) |
Looks for kidney stones and problems of the urinary tract. |
| Spine CT | Images the vertebrae and surrounding bone to assess back pain, fractures, or degenerative changes. |
A CT scan and an MRI differ mainly in how they create images: a CT scan uses X-rays, while an MRI uses magnetic fields and radio waves. Here are the key differences:
| Feature | CT Scan | MRI | Ultrasound | X-Ray |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Radiation | Uses ionising radiation | No ionising radiation | No ionising radiation | Uses ionising radiation |
| Image detail | High for bones; moderate for soft tissues | High for soft tissues; moderate for bones | Moderate for soft tissues; low for bones | High for bones; low for soft tissues |
| Typical duration | 5–15 minutes | 30–60 minutes | 30–45 minutes | Under 5 minutes |
| Noise level | Quiet | Loud (tapping/buzzing) | Quiet | Quiet |
| Enclosed space | Brief (ring scanner) | Yes (tunnel scanner) | No | No |
| Commonly used for | Chest, abdomen, bone and head injuries | Brain, spine, joints and soft tissues | Organs, blood vessels and blood flow | Bones, chest and fractures |
A CT scan is a painless procedure. Here is what you can typically expect:
The scan itself usually takes only a few minutes once you are positioned, though contrast scans and preparations can add to your overall visit time. You can return to your normal activities straight afterwards.
How you prepare for a CT scan depends on the type of scan and your condition. Our clinic will give you specific instructions after you book, but here are some general guidelines:
If you are unsure about anything, please contact us and we will guide you so your appointment goes smoothly.
A CT scan uses a small dose of ionising radiation, and the dose varies with the region scanned. It is generally recommended only after your doctor has assessed that the benefit of a clear diagnosis outweighs the risk.
Aside from that radiation, any side effects come from the contrast dye, when it is used, and are usually mild and temporary:
A non-contrast scan avoids these dye-related effects. If you are, or might be, pregnant, inform us before the scan.

Yes. You can use up to $600 of MediSave a year, per patient, to pay for a CT scan, as long as a doctor has assessed that it is needed to diagnose a condition (e.g. investigating a medical symptom or condition). You cannot use MediSave for plain X-rays, or for a CT scan done as part of a general or routine health screening. If you are unsure, please contact us for more information.
Whether your CT scan is covered depends on your insurance plan. Most private plans in Singapore cover a CT scan when your doctor has ordered it and it is medically necessary. Some plans ask for a referral letter or approval first, and some only cover scans done while you are admitted to hospital. Check with your insurer before your scan. If you need a referral letter or claim documents, you can inform our doctors, who can assist you.
Convenient, accessible, and caring. Here's what sets us apart.
Our friendly team will assist with your MediSave claims where applicable for eligible diagnostic CT scans.
A doctor reviews your results with you, explains what they mean, and advises on your next steps.
As well as CT, we arrange X-rays, ultrasound, and MRI, so all your imaging is handled in one place.
