What Is the Whooping Cough Vaccine?

The whooping cough vaccine helps the body develop immunity against Bordetella pertussis, the bacterium that causes whooping cough.

This respiratory infection is highly contagious and can result in prolonged coughing fits, breathing difficulties, and in some cases, life-threatening complications, particularly in infants and young children.

Singapore has seen a fivefold increase in reported cases from 2023 to 2024, reinforcing the importance of timely vaccination to safeguard both individual and community health.

What Is Whooping Cough?

Whooping cough, also referred to as pertussis or the “100-day cough,” is a bacterial infection of the respiratory system. In its early stages, it mimics symptoms of a mild cold, such as:

  • Nasal congestion or runny nose
  • Low-grade fever
  • Occasional coughing

As the illness advances, it leads to intense, repetitive coughing spells, often followed by a high-pitched “whoop” sound when inhaling.

These episodes may cause vomiting, fatigue, or more serious conditions like pneumonia. Infants and individuals with weakened immune systems are particularly at risk of serious outcomes.

How Does the Whooping Cough Vaccine Work?

In Singapore, protection against whooping cough is included in combination vaccines. Young children receive the DTaP vaccine (Diphtheria, Tetanus, and Pertussis), while older children and adults are given the Tdap vaccine.

These vaccines trigger the immune system to produce antibodies that neutralise the toxins made by Bordetella pertussis. As a result, vaccinated individuals are better protected from severe symptoms and are less likely to spread the infection.

These vaccines also offer immunity against tetanus and diphtheria, both of which can also lead to serious health issues.

Who Should Receive the Whooping Cough Vaccine?

In accordance with Singapore’s legal requirements, children must be vaccinated against diphtheria and pertussis as part of the National Childhood Immunisation Schedule (NCIS). The DTaP vaccine is administered in multiple doses between 2 and 18 months of age, with a Tdap booster given between 10 and 11 years.

Adults who have never received a Tdap vaccine, have certain medical conditions, or are due for a booster after 10 years are also advised to get vaccinated.

How Is the Vaccine Administered?

The Tdap vaccine is typically given as a single intramuscular injection, usually into the upper arm.

Whooping Cough Vaccine Schedule and Dosage

The Tdap vaccine is typically given as a single dose. To maintain continued protection, a booster dose is recommended every 10 years.

If you're unsure about your immunisation history or when your next booster is due, it's best to speak with your doctor for personalised advice.

How Long Does Immunity Last?

The protection provided by the Tdap vaccine usually lasts around a decade. Regular boosters every 10 years help to maintain long-term immunity.

Possible Side Effects of the Whooping Cough Vaccine
