What Is an Ultrasound Scan?

An ultrasound scan (also known as a sonogram or ultrasonography) is a non-invasive diagnostic imaging method that uses high-frequency sound waves to produce real-time images of organs, tissue, fluid or blood vessels in the body.

Unlike X-rays or CT scans, ultrasound does not use ionising radiation, making it a commonly used imaging tool for a wide range of medical assessments.

How Does an Ultrasound Scan Work?

An ultrasound scan typically works by placing a handheld device called a transducer on the skin, which emits sound waves that travel into the body and bounce off organs, tissue, and fluid. These returning echoes are picked up and sent to a computer, which converts them into images displayed on a monitor. A water-based gel is typically applied beforehand to help the sound waves travel more efficiently.

Because different tissues reflect sound waves differently, the ultrasound image can show the size, shape, and condition of internal structures. This allows your doctor to identify abnormalities such as cysts, tumours, fluid collections, or changes in organ size, and can also help guide certain medical procedures such as biopsies or fluid drainage.

Types of Ultrasound Scans

There are many types of ultrasound scans, with the type depending on the area of the body being assessed and the reason for the investigation.

Scan Description & Purpose
Ultrasound Thyroid Examines the thyroid gland in the neck for:
  • Detection of thyroid nodules or lumps
  • Enlarged thyroid (goitre)
  • Follow-up investigation of abnormal thyroid blood test results
Ultrasound Carotid Intima Media Thickness (CIMT) Measures the thickness of the carotid artery walls in the neck to:
  • Assess cardiovascular disease risk
  • Detect early atherosclerosis (plaque build-up)
  • Monitor patients with high cholesterol, hypertension, or diabetes
Ultrasound Breast Produces images of the breast to help assess:
  • Breast lumps or changes
  • Abnormal mammogram findings
  • Breast pain or nipple discharge
Ultrasound Liver (Full HBS) Examines the liver, gallbladder, and bile ducts to assess:
  • Fatty liver disease
  • Gallstones or bile duct abnormalities
  • Liver size, texture, and monitoring of existing liver conditions
Ultrasound Kidney Examines the kidneys to assess:
  • Kidney stones or blockages
  • Abnormal kidney size or structure
  • Recurrent urinary tract infections
Ultrasound Full Abdomen A comprehensive scan of the liver, gallbladder, pancreas, spleen, and kidneys for:
  • Unexplained abdominal pain or discomfort
  • General health screening and multiple organ assessment in a single scan
Ultrasound KUB
(Kidney, Ureters & Bladder)
A broader view of the entire urinary system to assess:
  • Stones or blockages in the urinary tract
  • Structural abnormalities of the kidneys, ureters, and bladder
  • Recurrent urinary tract infections (UTI)
  • Abnormal urine test results
Ultrasound Pelvis
(Transabdominal & Transvaginal)
Examines the uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes, and bladder transabdominally or transvaginally (TVS) to assess:
  • Irregular or heavy periods
  • Pelvic pain or bloating
  • Ovarian cysts, fibroids, or polyps
Ultrasound Prostate Assesses the prostate gland for:
  • Prostate size, shape, and abnormalities
  • Follow-up investigation of elevated prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels
  • Urinary symptoms such as difficulty or frequent urination
Ultrasound Testicles & Scrotum Evaluates the testicles and scrotum for:
  • Testicular lumps or swelling
  • Scrotal pain or discomfort
  • Varicocele or hydrocele
Ultrasound Heel
(Bone Mass Density)
Estimates bone density by measuring sound waves through the heel bone to:
  • Screen for osteoporosis or low bone density
  • Identify if a DEXA scan is needed
2D Echocardiogram Produces images of the heart to assess:
  • Heart chamber size, wall thickness, and valve function
  • Blood flow and pumping ability (ejection fraction)
  • Causes of chest pain, shortness of breath, or palpitations

Disclaimer: The information above is for general knowledge only and may not be comprehensive.

While ultrasound is a commonly used diagnostic tool, it has limitations and may not detect all abnormalities. Depending on the findings, complementary or follow-up tests such as blood tests, X-rays, CT scans, or MRI may be recommended for a more complete assessment.

What Happens During an Ultrasound Scan?

An ultrasound scan is typically straightforward and involves the following steps:

  1. You will lie on an examination bed in a private, enclosed room.
  2. A water-based gel is applied to the area being scanned. The gel helps transmit the sound waves.
  3. A transducer is moved over the skin, and the images appear on a monitor in real time.
  4. After the scan, the gel is wiped off. You can resume your daily activities immediately as there is no recovery time needed.

How Long Does an Ultrasound Scan Take?

At Singapore Women's Clinic, an ultrasound scan typically takes 30 to 45 minutes during off-peak hours, depending on the area and number of organs being scanned.

Your ultrasound report will be ready within 72 hours and will be emailed to you. An express report (within 24 hours) is available at an additional charge of $32.70 NETT.

How Do I Prepare for an Ultrasound Scan?

Most ultrasound scans do not require any special preparation. However, the following scans do:

Our clinic will provide preparation instructions after you book your appointment. If you are unsure, please contact us and we will be happy to assist.
