Trichomoniasis is a curable parasitic sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused
by the protozoan Trichomonas vaginalis,
which spreads through the exchange of genital fluids during unprotected sexual activity.
This infection can affect both men and women but is more commonly diagnosed in women. According to
the World Health Organization (WHO), there were an estimated 156 million new cases worldwide in people aged 15 to
49 in 2020, making it one of the most widespread non-viral STIs.
Trichomoniasis primarily spreads through unprotected sexual contact, including vaginal,
anal, or oral sex with an infected partner. Trichomonas vaginalis lives in the genital tract and
can be transmitted even when no symptoms are present.
The risk of transmission increases when protective measures such as condoms are not used consistently.
Trichomoniasis often presents with more noticeable symptoms in women, while some individuals may remain asymptomatic for extended periods. Common signs include:
Symptoms may also fluctuate or worsen during menstruation.
Symptoms of trichomoniasis can develop between 5 to 28
days after exposure, although many individuals remain asymptomatic for extended
periods.
In some cases, the infection can persist for months or even years without obvious signs, increasing the risk
of unknowingly transmitting it to sexual partners.
Untreated trichomoniasis can lead to serious health complications, especially for women, by increasing the risk of reproductive issues and other infections. This can include:
Testing for trichomoniasis typically involves a vaginal swab or urine sample to detect the presence of Trichomonas vaginalis. The process is minimally invasive, generally quick, and causes little to no discomfort.
Trichomoniasis is a curable infection and is typically treated with oral antibiotics. The dosage and duration may vary depending on the severity of the infection and individual health conditions. It is important to complete the entire course of medication, even if symptoms improve early, to ensure the infection is fully cleared and to prevent reinfection or transmission to others.
At Singapore Women's Clinic, we offer discreet and prompt testing for trichomoniasis and other STIs. Our pricing is as follows:
