What Is Shingles?

Shingles, also known as herpes zoster, is a viral infection characterised by a painful skin rash. It develops when the varicella-zoster virus, which remains inactive in the body after a person recovers from chickenpox, becomes reactivated later in life.

Although shingles is not typically life-threatening, it can cause considerable discomfort and may lead to complications such as persistent nerve pain. The risk of developing shingles increases with age, particularly in individuals aged 50 and older.

Symptoms of Shingles

Shingles often begins with unusual sensations such as pain, tingling, or burning on one side of the body. Common symptoms include:

  • A red, itchy rash that develops into fluid-filled blisters
  • Pain or tenderness in a specific area
  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Fatigue
  • Sensitivity to light

In some cases, individuals may experience postherpetic neuralgia (PHN), where nerve pain continues even after the rash heals. Complications can also include bacterial skin infections or, if the face is affected, vision impairment.

What Is the Shingles Vaccine?

The shingles vaccine, Shingrix, helps prevent shingles, a condition triggered by the varicella-zoster virus, which is the same virus responsible for chickenpox.

Shingrix is a recombinant, adjuvanted vaccine, meaning it uses a non-live component of the virus to stimulate a strong immune response. It offers strong and long-lasting protection, particularly for older adults who face a higher risk of developing shingles.

Who Is the Shingles Vaccine Recommended for?

The Shingrix vaccine is recommended for adults aged 50 and above, even if you are unsure whether you have had chickenpox. It is also suitable for those who have had shingles previously or were vaccinated with Zostavax®. Shingrix offers improved protection against shingles and its complications over time.

Shingles Vaccine Route of Administration

The Shingrix vaccine is administered as an intramuscular injection, usually in the upper arm.

Shingles Vaccine Dose & Schedule

Adults aged 50 and above are recommended to receive two doses of the Shingrix vaccine. The doses should be administered two to six months apart to ensure optimal immune response and lasting protection.

How Long Does the Shingles Vaccine Last?

The Shingrix vaccine has been shown to provide over 90% protection against both shingles and postherpetic neuralgia. This level of immunity typically lasts for at least seven years in individuals with healthy immune systems.

Shingles Vaccine Side Effects

The vaccine may cause temporary side effects such as:

These effects are generally mild. If they persist or worsen, you should consult your doctor.

Rare But Serious Reactions to Watch For

Although uncommon, some individuals may experience severe allergic responses. Symptoms to look out for include:

Seek immediate medical attention if any of these signs occur after vaccination.

Disclaimer: This overview does not cover all possible side effects or medical considerations. Always consult a qualified healthcare professional for medical advice before receiving any vaccination.
