What Is the Tdap Vaccine?

The Tdap vaccine is a combination immunisation that protects against three bacterial illnesses: tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (whooping cough).

Tetanus leads to muscle stiffness and painful spasms and can be life-threatening if untreated.
Diphtheria targets the throat and airways, potentially causing severe breathing difficulties, heart issues, or nerve damage.
Pertussis is a highly transmissible infection marked by bouts of severe coughing, which can affect breathing and recovery.

This vaccine boosts immunity against these diseases and helps reduce community transmission, especially among newborns and individuals who cannot be vaccinated due to medical reasons.

Difference Between Tdap and DTaP Vaccines

Both Tdap and DTaP vaccines offer protection against the same diseases but are formulated for different age groups.

DTaP is administered to infants and young children as part of the National Childhood Immunisation Schedule.
Tdap serves as a booster for adolescents and adults, containing smaller quantities of the diphtheria and pertussis components to reduce the likelihood of side effects while maintaining immune protection.

How the Tdap Vaccine Works

The Tdap vaccine prompts the body’s immune system to produce antibodies that target the toxins released by the bacteria.

For tetanus, it neutralises the toxins from Clostridium tetani, which cause muscle spasms.
For diphtheria and pertussis, it helps reduce respiratory symptoms and prevents transmission to others.

Who Should Receive the Tdap Vaccine?

In Singapore, diphtheria immunisation is compulsory. Under the National Childhood Immunisation Schedule:

Children receive a series of DTaP vaccinations between 2 and 18 months.
A Tdap booster is given at around 10–11 years of age.

Adults may be advised to receive the Tdap vaccine if they have never been vaccinated, have specific medical conditions, or if it has been more than 10 years since their last tetanus-containing vaccine.

Tdap Vaccine Dose and Schedule

Difficulty breathing
Generalised itchy rash
