What Is HIV?

HIV, or Human Immunodeficiency Virus, is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) that weakens the immune system by attacking CD4 cells, a type of white blood cell essential for fighting infections.

Over time, the destruction of these cells compromises the body's defences, making it more susceptible to illness.

If untreated, HIV can develop into AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome), a late-stage condition where the immune system is severely weakened. This increases the risk of serious infections, cancers, and other health complications.

HIV vs HPV: What Is the Difference?

HIV and human papillomavirus (HPV) are both STIs, but they affect different parts of the body and have distinct long-term outcomes.

HIV attacks the immune system, specifically targeting CD4 cells, and requires lifelong medical management to keep the virus under control.

In contrast, HPV affects the skin and mucous membranes and is often associated with genital warts or certain cancers, including cervical cancer. Unlike HIV, most HPV infections are temporary and are cleared naturally by the immune system without the need for long-term treatment.

How Does HIV Spread?

HIV is primarily spread through sexual contact involving the exchange of bodily fluids such as blood, semen, vaginal fluids, and rectal secretions. The virus enters the body through mucous membranes or direct exposure to the bloodstream.

HIV is not spread through casual contact such as hugging, kissing, sharing food, or touching common surfaces. It also cannot be transmitted through sweat, airborne particles, water exposure, or insect bites.

HIV Rate / Cases in Singapore

In Singapore, approximately 200 to 400 new HIV cases are diagnosed each year. Transmission via sexual contact remains the leading mode of infection.

Most cases occur among individuals aged 20 to 49 years, highlighting the importance of regular HIV testing, especially for those who are sexually active or have had potential exposure.

What Are Symptoms of HIV?

HIV symptoms in the early stages often resemble those of a common viral illness such as the flu, even though the virus has already begun to weaken the immune system. During this initial phase, a person may experience:

  • Fever
  • Fatigue
  • Muscle aches
  • Skin rashes
  • Night sweats
  • Swollen lymph nodes
  • Weight loss

These symptoms usually resolve without treatment, but the virus remains in the body and continues to impair the immune system without obvious signs.

How Fast Does HIV Show Up?

HIV may be detectable as early as 2 weeks after exposure using 4th-generation tests.

This early phase falls within what is known as the window period, which refers to the time between HIV exposure and when the virus can be reliably detected by testing. For most individuals, this period can extend up to 3 months, depending on the type of test used and the body’s immune response.

If testing is done soon after potential exposure, a follow-up test after 3 months is typically recommended for confirmation.

How Is HIV Tested and Diagnosed?

HIV testing is usually performed through blood tests that detect specific markers of the virus or the body’s response to it.

  • Antibody tests detect antibodies, which are proteins made by the immune system in response to HIV.
  • Antigen/antibody tests detect both HIV antibodies and p24 antigens, which are proteins from the virus itself that appear early after infection.
  • Nucleic acid amplification tests (NAATs) detect the virus's genetic material (RNA) directly in the blood, allowing for the earliest detection after exposure.

These tests differ in how early they can detect HIV after exposure. Consulting a doctor can help you determine the most appropriate test based on your situation and the timing of potential exposure.

Can HIV Be Cured?

There is currently no cure for HIV. However, advances in medical treatment mean the virus can be controlled, allowing individuals to live long and healthy lives.

How Is HIV Treated?

HIV is managed through antiretroviral therapy (ART), a daily combination of medications that suppresses the virus and protects the immune system. When taken consistently, ART can reduce the viral load to undetectable levels. This helps to:
