What Is an X-Ray?

An X-ray is a diagnostic imaging technique that uses a small amount of radiation to produce images of the structures inside your body. It is one of the most widely used medical imaging methods, commonly performed to assess bones, joints, the chest, and certain soft tissues.

During an X-ray, electromagnetic waves pass through the body and are absorbed at different rates depending on the density of the tissue. Dense structures such as bones appear white on the image, while softer tissues appear in shades of grey. The resulting image allows for the evaluation of fractures, infections, abnormal growths, and other conditions without the need for invasive procedures.

X-rays are quick, painless, and typically completed within minutes, making them a practical first-line diagnostic tool.

Types of X-Ray Scans

There are several types of X-ray scans used to diagnose or monitor conditions, with the type depending on the area of the body being assessed.

Scan Description & Purpose
Chest X-Ray Produces images of the heart, lungs, airways, blood vessels, and bones of the chest to help assess:
  • Pneumonia and lung infections
  • Persistent cough or shortness of breath
  • Heart enlargement or fluid around the lungs
  • Tuberculosis (TB) screening, often required for employment or immigration purposes
  • Pre-operative assessments
Abdominal X-Ray Captures images of the stomach, intestines, liver, and spleen to help investigate:
  • Unexplained abdominal pain
  • Suspected bowel obstruction
  • Kidney stones
  • Swallowed foreign objects
Spinal X-Ray Examines the vertebrae and spinal alignment to assess:
Pelvic X-Ray Produces images of the pelvic bones and hip joints to assess:
  • Hip pain or injury
  • Pelvic fractures
  • Joint degeneration or arthritis
Extremity X-Ray
(Hands, Wrists, Feet, Ankles, Knees, Shoulders)
Focuses on the bones and joints of the limbs to assess:
  • Fractures or dislocations
  • Joint pain, swelling, or stiffness
  • Arthritis or degenerative joint conditions
  • Sports injuries or repetitive strain

Disclaimer: The information above is for general knowledge only and may not be comprehensive.

While X-rays are a commonly used diagnostic tool, they have limitations and may not detect all abnormalities. Depending on the findings, complementary or follow-up tests such as blood tests, ultrasound, CT scans, or MRI may be recommended for a more complete assessment.

What Happens During an X-Ray Scan?

An X-ray scan is a straightforward procedure. Here is what you can generally expect:

  1. You may be asked to change into a gown and remove any jewellery, glasses, or metal accessories that could interfere with the image.
  2. A radiographer will position you against the X-ray machine or on an examination table, depending on the body part being scanned.
  3. You will be asked to remain still and may need to hold your breath briefly.
  4. The X-ray machine sends a controlled beam of radiation through your body while the image is captured. The actual exposure to radiation lasts only a fraction of a second per image.
  5. In some cases, multiple images may be taken from different angles to provide a more complete view.

How Long Does an X-Ray Scan Take?

At Singapore Women's Clinic, most X-ray scans typically take between 5 and 15 minutes, excluding consultation and review timing. The total duration depends on the number of views required and the body part being examined.

Results may be reviewed by your doctor on the same day or sent to you within a few working days, depending on the purpose of the X-ray. You can return to your normal activities immediately after the scan.

How Do I Prepare for an X-Ray?

Most X-ray scans require little to no preparation. You do not need to fast or make any dietary changes beforehand. However, there are a few general guidelines to follow:

Can I Use MediSave to Pay for My X-Ray?

MediSave cannot be used to pay for X-ray scans, as they are not covered under its current outpatient schemes, which are limited to specific categories such as chronic disease management, vaccinations, and certain diagnostic scans like ultrasound.

However, your personal insurance plan may cover X-rays depending on the purpose of your scan, so it is best to check with your insurance provider directly.
