What Is the Varicella Vaccine for?

The varicella vaccine helps protect against chickenpox, which is caused by the varicella-zoster virus (VZV). This live attenuated vaccine uses a weakened form of the virus to stimulate the immune system and build defences without causing the disease itself.

What Is Chickenpox?

Chickenpox, medically termed varicella, is a viral infection that spreads easily through respiratory droplets, direct contact with the rash, or contaminated surfaces.

Although it most commonly affects children, unvaccinated individuals of any age can contract it. People with weakened immune systems or without prior immunity are more likely to experience complications.

Following recovery, most individuals develop long-term immunity. However, the virus can stay dormant in the body and potentially reactivate years later, leading to shingles.

Symptoms of Chickenpox

Initial symptoms of chickenpox are similar to those of the flu and may include:

These blisters generally emerge on the face, torso, and back before spreading. Over time, the blisters dry up and scab over.

While many cases are mild, chickenpox can lead to complications such as skin infections, pneumonia, encephalitis, or sepsis. Individuals with compromised immune function or who are not vaccinated face a higher risk of such complications.

Varicella Vaccine Dose & Schedule

Under the National Adult Immunisation Schedule (NAIS), adults aged 18 and above who have not been vaccinated or previously infected with chickenpox are advised to receive two doses of the varicella vaccine. These doses should be administered four to eight weeks apart.

Vaccine Route of Administration

The varicella vaccine is administered through a subcutaneous injection (beneath the skin). It may be given on its own or in combination with other vaccines, such as the MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccine.

How Long Does the Varicella Vaccine Last?

With two doses, the vaccine generally provides long-lasting, often lifelong protection. If you're unsure about your immunity, a blood test can check for varicella antibodies. Your doctor may recommend a booster in specific cases.

What Precautions Should I Take Before a Varicella Vaccination?

Before receiving the vaccine, inform your doctor if you:

If you are unsure, consult your doctor to determine whether the varicella vaccine is suitable for you.

Potential Varicella Vaccine Side Effects

Most side effects are mild and temporary. These may include:

If symptoms persist or worsen, it is advisable to seek medical advice.

Rare But Serious Reactions to Watch For

Although uncommon, some individuals may experience severe allergic responses. Symptoms to look out for include:

Seek immediate medical attention if any of these signs occur after vaccination.
