What Is Yellow Fever?
Yellow fever is a viral infection that spreads through the bites of infected mosquitoes, mainly the Aedes aegypti species. The disease is classed as an acute viral haemorrhagic illness because it can cause bleeding. It is found in tropical parts of Africa and South America.
At Singapore Women's Clinic, we are a designated Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre, licensed by the Ministry of Health (MOH) to administer the yellow fever vaccine. The vaccine costs $233.26 per dose at our clinics.
Yellow Fever Vaccination Requirements in Singapore
As Singapore is free from yellow fever, specific entry requirements are in place to reduce
the risk of the disease being introduced or spreading locally.
All travellers, including Singapore residents, who arrive in Singapore within 6 days of
leaving or transiting a country with a risk of yellow fever transmission must hold a valid yellow fever
vaccination certificate.
This certificate must be shown to the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) officer at the
immigration counter upon arrival.
When to Get Vaccinated Against Yellow Fever?
It is recommended to receive the vaccination at least 10 days before your trip to
allow sufficient time for your body to build immunity.
Upon vaccination, you will be issued a hard
copy of the International Certificate of Vaccination, which is globally recognised
and provided at no additional cost.
How Is the Yellow Fever Vaccine Administered?
The yellow fever vaccine is given as a subcutaneous injection, typically in the upper arm.
How Long Does the Yellow Fever Vaccine Last?
A single dose of the yellow fever vaccine offers lifelong protection for most individuals. However, a booster shot may be necessary for some people, particularly those travelling to regions with a higher risk of transmission.
What Are the Side Effects of the Yellow Fever Vaccine?
Most people experience only mild side effects from the yellow fever vaccine, such as headaches,
muscle aches, or low-grade fevers. In rare cases, serious reactions can occur, including severe
allergic responses that may cause difficulty breathing or swallowing.
If you notice any of these symptoms, please seek medical attention immediately.
Who Should Not Get the Yellow Fever Vaccine?
The yellow fever vaccine is generally not recommended for certain individuals. Inform your healthcare provider if any of the following apply:
- Infants under 6 months of age
- Individuals with a severe allergy to any component of the vaccine, including eggs, chicken proteins, or gelatin
- Anyone who has had a serious reaction to a previous yellow fever vaccination
- People who are pregnant or planning to conceive
