What Is the E. coli (ETEC) Vaccine?
The E. coli (ETEC) vaccine is formulated to help prevent illness caused by Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC), a major contributor to travellers’ diarrhoea and a significant source of gastrointestinal disease in children globally.
What Is E. coli?
Escherichia coli, commonly known as E. coli, is a type of bacteria that naturally inhabits
the digestive tracts of humans and animals. While most strains are harmless, specific types like ETEC
produce toxins that interfere with fluid absorption in the intestines, resulting in
diarrhoea.
ETEC is especially prevalent in regions with inadequate sanitation and is a common concern for travellers to
such areas.
E. coli (ETEC) Symptoms
Infection with ETEC often results in gastrointestinal symptoms that typically appear within 1 to 3 days after exposure. These may include:
- Watery diarrhoea
- Abdominal cramps or stomach pain
- Nausea
- Mild fever
- Fatigue
- Dehydration due to fluid loss
While most cases resolve within a few days, more severe dehydration may require medical attention, especially in vulnerable individuals such as young children or the elderly.
