What Is the E. coli (ETEC) Vaccine?
The E. coli (ETEC) vaccine is an oral vaccine that helps prevent travellers' diarrhoea caused by a type of E. coli bacteria called enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC). ETEC is also a common cause of stomach infections in children around the world.
What Is E. coli?
Escherichia coli, commonly known as E. coli, is a type of bacteria that naturally inhabits
the digestive tracts of humans and animals. While most strains are harmless, specific types like ETEC
produce toxins that interfere with fluid absorption in the intestines, resulting in
diarrhoea.
ETEC is especially prevalent in regions with inadequate sanitation and is a common concern for travellers to
such areas.
E. coli (ETEC) Symptoms
Infection with ETEC often results in gastrointestinal symptoms that typically appear within 1 to 3 days after exposure. These may include:
- Watery diarrhoea
- Abdominal cramps or stomach pain
- Nausea
- Mild fever
- Fatigue
- Dehydration due to fluid loss
While most cases resolve within a few days, more severe dehydration may require medical attention, especially in vulnerable individuals such as young children or the elderly.
How Is E. coli (ETEC) Vaccine Administered?
The ETEC vaccine is generally taken orally, offering a needle-free method of administration.

E. coli (ETEC) Vaccine Dose & Schedule
The recommended dosing schedule for the ETEC vaccine varies by age group:
- Adults and children over 6 years old should take 2 doses, spaced 1 week apart. The second dose should be completed at least 1 week before travel.
- Children aged 2 to 6 years may require 3 doses, with each dose given at least 1 week apart.
- Children under 2 years old are not recommended to receive the Dukoral vaccine.

How Long Does E. coli (ETEC) Vaccine Last?
The Dukoral vaccine protects against ETEC-related travellers’ diarrhoea for approximately three months. In addition to ETEC, the vaccine also provides longer-lasting protection against cholera.
E. coli (ETEC) Vaccine Side Effects
Most side effects from the ETEC vaccine are mild and temporary. Common reactions may include:
- Fatigue
- Low-grade fever
- Abdominal discomfort
- Headache
- Diarrhoea
These symptoms usually resolve on their own without the need for medical treatment. However, if they persist or worsen, it is advisable to seek medical attention.
Rare But Serious Reactions to Watch For
Although uncommon, some individuals may experience severe allergic responses. Symptoms to look out for include:
- Swelling of the face or eyes
- Difficulty breathing
- Generalised itchy rash
Seek immediate medical attention if any of these signs occur after vaccination.
