What Is the Pfizer-BioNTech/Comirnaty COVID-19 Vaccine?
The Pfizer-BioNTech/Comirnaty JN.1 COVID-19 vaccine is an mRNA vaccine that has been updated to target newer strains of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, including the Omicron JN.1 variant.
The vaccine delivers messenger RNA (mRNA), a set of instructions that tells your cells to make a harmless copy of the virus's spike protein. Your immune system then learns to recognise this protein, so it can respond quickly if you are exposed to the virus later.
The mRNA vaccine cannot give you COVID-19, as it contains genetic instructions rather than any live virus.
Eligibility for Pfizer-BioNTech/Comirnaty JN.1 COVID-19 Vaccine
Approved in Singapore in
October 2024,
the Comirnaty JN.1 vaccine is part of the Ministry of Health's (MOH) National Vaccination Programme.
It is available for individuals aged 6 months and above who are eligible for mRNA-based vaccines.
Vaccination is encouraged for:
- Seniors aged 60 years and older
- Persons aged 6 months and above with underlying health conditions
- Those working or living in settings with elevated exposure risk, such as healthcare facilities
The vaccine is also suitable for those looking to stay up to date with the latest vaccine version targeting current virus variants.
How Is the Pfizer-BioNTech/Comirnaty COVID-19 Vaccine Given?
This vaccine is administered through an intramuscular injection, usually into the upper arm.
Pfizer-BioNTech/Comirnaty COVID-19 Vaccine Dose & Schedule
The recommended schedule for the Comirnaty JN.1 vaccine depends on your age and previous vaccination status:
- Unvaccinated (aged 5 and above) — 1 dose
- Unvaccinated (aged 6 months to 4 years) — 2 doses, 8 weeks apart
- Previously vaccinated (at higher risk) — A single additional dose, around 1 year (at least 5 months) after the most recent dose
Individuals with moderate-to-severe immunocompromise are recommended 3 initial doses.

Side Effects of the Pfizer-BioNTech/Comirnaty JN.1 COVID-19 Vaccine
The Comirnaty JN.1 vaccine may cause mild side effects, including:
- Dizziness
- Pain or redness where the injection was given
- Headache
These effects are usually temporary. However, if symptoms continue or worsen, seek medical advice.
Rare But Serious Reactions to Watch For
Although uncommon, some individuals may experience severe allergic responses. Symptoms to look out for include:
- Swelling of the face or eyes
- Difficulty breathing
- Generalised itchy rash
