The Pfizer-BioNTech/Comirnaty JN.1 COVID-19 vaccine is an mRNA vaccine updated to target newer strains of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, including the Omicron JN.1 variant.
It works by delivering messenger RNA (mRNA) that instructs your cells to produce a harmless copy of the virus's spike protein. This trains the immune system to recognise the virus and respond to it if you are exposed in the future.
Because it relies on genetic instructions rather than any live virus, this mRNA vaccine cannot give you COVID-19.
