What Does the MMR Vaccine Protect Against?

The MMR vaccine offers protection against three separate viral infections: Measles, Mumps, and Rubella. It contains live, attenuated (weakened) versions of each virus, which help trigger the body’s immune response without causing illness in individuals with a healthy immune system.

Measles

Measles usually presents with a skin rash, along with symptoms such as cough, runny nose, eye irritation, and fever. In more severe cases, it can lead to complications like ear infections, pneumonia, or even brain damage.

Mumps

Mumps often leads to symptoms such as fever, headache, muscle aches, reduced appetite, and swelling of the salivary glands. In some cases, it can result in complications like meningitis or hearing loss.

Rubella (German Measles)

Rubella, also known as German measles, typically causes a rash, mild fever, and arthritis—especially in women. If contracted during pregnancy, it can lead to serious birth defects.

Eligibility for MMR Vaccine

According to the Singapore National Childhood Immunisation Schedule, the MMR vaccine is a required immunisation for children, starting at one year of age, with a second dose given at least one month later. It is also mandatory for school admission.

As outlined in the Singapore National Adult Immunisation Schedule (NAIS), adults aged 18 and above who have not been vaccinated or do not have immunity should also complete a two-dose series.

What Precautions Should I Take Before My MMR Immunisation?

Before receiving the MMR vaccine, it’s important to inform your healthcare provider if any of the following apply:

  • You have any known allergies to this vaccine or its components, including Neomycin or egg products
  • You are pregnant, planning to conceive, or currently breastfeeding:
    • If you are planning to conceive: Avoid getting pregnant for at least 1 month after receiving the vaccine.
    • If you are already pregnant: You should wait until after childbirth to get vaccinated.
  • You are taking any medications
  • You are feeling unwell or have a fever
  • You are on medications that may suppress your immune system (e.g., high-dose steroids)
  • You have HIV, cancer, or a weakened immune system
  • You have active, untreated tuberculosis
  • You have a history of seizures, bleeding disorders, or have recently had a blood transfusion

If you are unsure, consult your doctor to determine whether the MMR vaccine is suitable for you.

How Is the MMR Vaccine Administered?

The MMR vaccine is injected under the skin, typically administered in a two-dose series. It can be administered individually or together with other vaccines like the Varicella (chickenpox) vaccine.

Common Side Effects of the MMR Vaccine

After your MMR vaccination, you may temporarily experience:

  • Feeling faint. You may wish to remain seated for about 15 minutes afterwards
  • Pain, redness, or swelling at the injection site
  • Fever, which can be managed with paracetamol
  • A mild rash

Monitoring for Severe Vaccine Reactions

On rare occasions, the vaccine may trigger severe allergic reactions. Immediate medical advice should be sought if symptoms such as the following are observed:

  • Feeling faint. You may wish to remain seated for about 15 minutes afterwards
  • Pain, redness, or swelling at the injection site
  • Fever, which can be managed with paracetamol
  • A mild rash

If you experience such symptoms, please seek medical attention promptly.
